          An example of ?the Company’s robotic solutions for the nuclear industry is the Calandria Vault Inspection and Repair Manipulator (CVIRM) developed for Ontario Power Generation, operators of Ontario Hydro’s Pickering Nuclear Generating Station ‘A’. Controlled from a remote workstation, operators commanded the highly dexterous CVIRM robot inside the radioactive chamber via a very confined opening. The 14-metre robotic arm navigated through obstacles within the four-story reactor in a controlled and precise manner to check for possible corrosion and degradation, while radiation resistant cameras provided 360° views and high-resolution close-up images of the suspect parts at multiple inspection sites. ?The Company’s robotic solution provided a close-up look at carbon steel components and structural welds deep within the concrete walls of the reactor, capabilities representing significant financial and safety benefit of robotics to all nuclear power operators.

          ENGINEERING SERVICES: systematic and structured approach to help utilities reduce risk of project overruns

          The Company has been involved in the nuclear industry for over 25 years providing specialized equipment solutions and engineering services – including design, development, manufacturing, integration, test, and operations support of our deployed systems. Successful deployments include the Calandria Vault Inspection and Repair Manipulators (CVRIM), Light Duty Utility Arm System (LDUA), and the CIGAR control system upgrade.

          For all these projects, the Company has used a systematic and disciplined approach to engineering and project management derived from our aerospace heritage.


          SAFETY ASSESSMENTS AND THIRD PARTY REVIEWS: assessments and reports for pre-start health/safety reviews

          ?The Company has the specialized knowledge, resources, and experience in the preparation of safety assessments and hazard reports required to support pre-start health and safety reviews. In addition, ?the Company has program management and technical staff experienced in managing and executing large engineering development projects. This expertise has been utilized for independent third party reviews or oversight to assess the performance of large projects and provide recommendations for improvement.

          Previous assessments and reviews include the Bruce Power Units 1 and 2 re-tube assessment and the Bruce Reactor Inspection and Maintenance System (BRIMS) safety and hazard risk assessment.

          MRI COMPATIBLE ROBOTICS, DEVICES AND TOOLS: systems to operate inside challenging environments

          Systems to provide precise positioning of tools capable of operating inside the challenging environment of the MRI bore. Project neuroArm created a two armed tele-operated robotic system capable of performing neurosurgery. With the ability to scale motion, reduce tremor and provide haptic feedback, neuroArm can enhance a surgeon’s ability to perform delicate procedures.

          IMAGE GUIDED AUTOMATED SOLUTIONS: connecting medical imagery to technology

          Connecting medical imagery such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to intervention to simplify minimally invasive intervention. The Image Guided Robot project (IGAR) is a small, dexterous robot that enables remote manipulation of devices inside an Magnetic Resonance (RM) bore based on MRI image data.

          MEDICAL DEVICE PRODUCT DEFINITION AND DEVELOPMENT: creating innovative solutions for the real world

          The Company's expertise is capable of identifying needs, core value propositions, creating innovative solutions and implementing them in the real world. Synaptive’s BrightMatter drive project took a high-level concept of automating device positioning during neurosurgery, and created a product that seamlessly delivers a high-quality view of the surgical site to the surgeon with the press of a button.
